Premier League Everton attempts to clinch UEFA Spot

by Steve Hastings on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Everton will try and clinch a spot in the Soccer Betting  UEFA Cup on Sunday as they travel to face Arsenal. With just two games remaining the Toffees have 62 points, three clear of sixth place Aston Villa. Manager David Moyes is confident his club can get the necessary points in one of their final two matches even after blowing the lead against Aston Villa last week and settling for a 2-2 draw. "The boys played well and it was a decent game," Moyes said, “Apart from conceding the goals, I don't think we can really complain about their effort.

I saw signs on Sunday that we were coming back to form and we are looking forward to the last two games."

Arsenal is on the outside of the Premier League title race, trailing Manchester United by four points with only two games left. They will probably be eliminated before Sunday’s game begins since Manchester United is expected to easily handle West Ham on Saturday.  Arsenal may not have much motivation on Sunday but Everton is not playing well of late having won only one of their last eight Premier League matches.  Arsenal won at Everton by a score of 4-1 earlier this season.  It may not be as easy on Sunday with Everton having more motivation. "Arsenal know they are going to be in for a game and it is about time we are due a result in one of these matches. We have got two games to go now and they are massive for us.” Everton’s Lee Carsley said, “They are cup finals, if you like. We still believe that we can finish fifth. Yes, we were a bit down after the draw with Villa on Sunday but that is behind us. We move on together and look forward to giving it everything we have got." If Everton loses against Arsenal the door would be open for Aston Villa.  They are home on Saturday against Wigan in a game they should win.

Looking at past history between Arsenal and Everton we see that Arsenal has won four of their last five home matches against Everton with one game ending in a tie.  The last two matches at this locale between the two teams have gone under the total but the previous three all went over.  Overall, Everton has gone under in 8 of their last 10 matches while Arsenal has split versus the total in their last 10 matches going 5-5. Arsenal has yet to lose at home this season with 13 wins and five draws.  Everton on the road this season has done very well with 8 wins and 4 draws against only six losses.
