Euro 2008 Odds Preview

by Steve Hastings on Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Euro 2008 odds action gets underway this weekend in Switzerland and Austria as the eyes of the soccer world turn to the Soccer Betting European Championship.  A total of 16 countries will compete in Euro 2008 in four different groupings. The tournament begins on Saturday, June 7th and concludes in Vienna on Sunday, June 29th with the final. Here is a look at each of the groups and the favorites.

Group A: The favorite in this group is Portugal who is led by the best player in the world, striker Cristiano Ronaldo. He led Manchester United to the Premier League title and to the Champions League title.  Can he now lead Portugal to the Euro 2008 title? Portugal was second in Euro 2004 and finished fourth at the 2006 World Cup and is one of the main favorites for Euro 2008.

Euro 2008 Odds PreviewThe Czech Republic is not far behind Portugal.  They have Petr Cech in goal and he had a superb season for Chelsea.  The problem for the Czech Republic is that they won’t score many goals. Turkey is the third choice in this grouping and a longshot to advance but if the Czech Republic slips then Turkey could surprise.  Host team Switzerland is the other team in this group and they have injuries to Patrick Muller, Philipp Degen and Alex Frei which will make it difficult for them to advance even though they are at home.

Croatia is the team that knocked England out of this tournament during qualifying.  They could be the team that advances with Germany from this group. Poland will try and upset Croatia and be the team that joins Germany.  They have the ability but rarely have produced.  The host team, Austria faces an uphill battle but at least they are at home.

Group C:  Italy is the World Champion and should advance with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon leading the way.  They also have Luca Toni to score goals.  France is led by Franck Ribery, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry. They are a threat to win this group.  Holland has usually underachieved but they have the talent to win this group.  Romania is up against it in this “group of death.”

Group D:  Spain has all the talent but rarely does anything with it. They have the exciting Fernando Torres and should advance from this group. Greece is the defending European champions and plays great defense.  They will be very tough in this group.  Russia is an unknown that could do anything in this group from winning it to finishing last. Sweden has Zlatan Ibrahimovic and not much else.
