USA Shocks Spain in 2009 Confederations Cup Semis: Team USA pulled off one of the biggest shockers in FIFA Confederations Cup soccer history by topping World No. 1 ranked Spain 2-0 in a 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semifinals round on Wednesday in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The USA now advances to the Confederations Cup championship game against the winner of the other semifinals match between Brazil and South Africa to be played Thursday.
Online sportsbook BetUS.com had the Americans listed as such an underdog that a $100 money line wager on team USA at +1200 money line odds would pay $1,200.
Jozy Altidore, the 19 year old striker for team USA, scored the winning goal mid-way through the first half. The second score was added late in the second half by Clint Dempsey to seal the victory for team USA.
"I can't explain it any more than you can," said American goalkeeper Tim Howard said. "Sports is funny sometimes, but when you put your mind to something, you can achieve it." Howard defied the Spaniards with a series of saves in the second half.
"The only thing that was going to get us through this game was sticking together, working hard and we did that. We rode our luck at times, they were a great team, they pushed us all the way to the limit but we took our chances well."
