The 2014 World Cup Semifinals get underway on Tuesday, July 8th when host country Brazil battles Germany at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte. Start time in the much anticipated match is set for 3:00 p.m. (CDT); coverage will be provided by ESPN and ESPN3. The latest World Cup picks from offshore bookmaker Bovada.lv have Germany listed as a slight +160 money line favorite. Brazil, which will be without its leading goalscorer Neymar, is getting +175 World Cup Odds to advance to Sunday’s final. The total in tomorrow’s meeting between Brazil and Germany is set at 2.5 and the Under is favored at -175 odds.
Brazil advances to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over Colombia on Friday, but victory came at a price. The team’s top offensive threat, Neymar, suffered a broken vertebra late in the match and he has been ruled out the remainder of the World Cup.
Fortunately for Brazil, it is a talented team and, as the odds suggest, one still capable of competing against a squad as deep and talented as Germany.
Defense will be of the utmost importance, but Brazil is a fantastic defensive team. Luiz Felipe Scolari’s troops held Colombia to two shots on goal in Friday’s match and they have not allowed more than a goal in any one World Cup contest. In fact, Brazil has not yielded more than a goal in a match since facing Italy in a Confederations Cup battle last June (17 matches).
Germany certainly has the firepower to test the Brazilians, but it has slowed from its early World Cup pace. The Germans scored six goals in their first two tournament matches, but they have scored a total of four in their last three matches.
Germany fired just nine shots, only three of which were on goal, in Friday’s 1-0 win over France.
Tomorrow will mark the second World Cup clash between these two countries. The first came at the 2002 tournament; Brazil won the match 2-0 thanks to the great Renaldo, who scored goals at the 67 and 79 minute marks.
