Argentina vs Netherlands Odds 2014 World Cup Predictions

lionel messi argentinaWednesday’s World Cup match will be a star laden affair with the likes of Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben patrolling the pitch, but the really big names are Argentina and the Netherlands as the two countries attempt to claim a spot in Sunday’s finale. Right now the World Cup odds makers at expect that team to be Argentina. The latest 2014 World Cup Predictions from the offshore bookmaker have Messi and company listed as a +135 favorite. The Dutch are getting +215 odds to win the semifinal showdown and the Over two goals is slightly favored at -115 odds.

The Dutch held on in Saturday’s quarterfinals, but just barely. Costa Rica, the World Cup’s biggest surprise, held the potent Netherlands goal-less in regulation and extra time, forcing a penalty shoot-out between the two squads.

Two shootout saves from substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul helped the Netherlands ice the match as they won (4)-(3) on penalty kicks.

While Costa Rica’s effort was an inspiration, it was truly the Dutch who earned the right to advance. The Netherlands dominated everything from possession time (63 percent to 33 percent) to shots on goal (eight to one) to corners (11 to one), leaving no doubt which was the better side.

That will be a much bigger question on Wednesday, though, when the Dutch match-up against Argentina.

While the Albiceleste has not been as explosive offensively as some other clubs this World Cup (eight goals in five matches), it has a player in Lionel Messi that can end everything with one kick, something more than one of team’s challengers have already discovered. But, perhaps more importantly, Argentina has played exceptional defensive football this World Cup.

Only one team — Nigeria — has scored more than a goal against Argentina and Alejandro Sabella’s squad has limited three of its five World Cup opponents, including a highly skilled Belgium club, to zero goals.

Wednesday’s meeting between Argentina and the Netherlands is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m. (CDT) in Sao Paulo’s Arena Corinthians. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN.
