The battle for third place at the 2014 World Cup is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, July 12th at the Nacional in Brasilia. The match will feature host country Brazil, the Group A winner, taking on Group B champion the Netherlands. Bovada’s latest 2014 World Cup picks have Brazil listed as a +130 money line favorite while the Dutch are drawing +185 World Cup odds to win third place for the first time in their history. The total in Saturday’s match is set at three goals; both the Over and Under are getting -110 odds.
Brazil was a slight underdog in its semifinals showdown with Germany, but it was hardly a stretch to think David Luiz and company, even without Neymar in the lineup, could win the match.
Germany, however, quickly ended any hope Brazil had toward that end, jumping out to a 5-0 lead just 29 minutes into the match. It went on to win the contest 7-1 ending a Brazil home winning streak that dated back to the 1960’s.
Amazingly, Brazil looked as though it was in the match based solely on the stat sheet. The team registered a 100 percent tackle success rate and it held possession 47 percent of the time. Brazil attempted 18 shots, eight shots on goal and seven corners while Germany logged 14, 10 and five, respectively, in the route.
Heading into Tuesday’s meeting with Germany, Brazil had allowed just four goals in five World Cup matches.
As for the Netherlands, they turned in a far more polished semifinals performance; however, they were still on the losing end of things. The Dutch ended regulation and extra time knotted in a 0-0 tie with Argentina, forcing a penalty shootout with Lionel Messi and his cohorts. But unlike Saturday’s win over Costa Rica, the Netherlands faltered in the shootout period, losing (4)-(2) on penalty kicks.
