Germany will take aim at a fourth World Cup title on Sunday, July 13th when it collides with Argentina, a two-time World Cup champion, at the Estadio Do Maracana in Rio De Janeiro. The two football powers are scheduled to take the pitch at 2:00 p.m. (CT); coverage of the 2014 World Cup Final will be provided by ABC. Opening World Cup odds for this weekend’s finale have Germany and the Over two goals listed as +120 and -120 favorites, respectively. Argentina, which last won the World Cup in 1986, is drawing a +240 line in Sunday’s championship match.
While Argentina has the biggest star in the World Cup finale in Lionel Messi, Germany would seemingly have the more complete team. It demonstrated as much on Tuesday, defeating host country Brazil in epic 7-1 fashion.
The goals came early and often for Joachim Low’s crew as they found themselves up 5-0 before 30 minutes had even ticked off the clock. Germany finished the match with 14 shots and 10 shots on goal as five different players scored in the lopsided contest.
Argentina’s road to the final was more perilous as it required a penalty shootout against a talented and experienced Dutch squad. The La Albiceleste got goals from Messi, Ezequiel Garay, Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez to win the shootout 4-2.
The contest ended in a 0-0 draw, marking the third straight match and the fourth time this tournament Argentina kept its opposition out of the net.
Sunday’s will represent just the latest chapter in what is a rich World Cup history between Germany and Argentina. The two countries have faced each other six times on the World Cup stage, including the 2006 and 2010 quarterfinals, and they have met in the final on two other occasions (1986 and 1990). Germany owns a 4-1-1 advantage in their previous six meetings, but Argentina’s lone win did come in the 1986 World Cup championship.
