Mexico Stunned USA in Gold Cup Final 2009

by Abe Luciano on Monday, July 27th, 2009

After nine losses and two tied games against the Americans, Mexico finally got its first win against the United States outside Mexico City since March 13, 1999 on Sunday nights Gold Cup Final. This was not just any win; this was an embarrassing, 5-0 win, in what was the largest soccer crowd in Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.

The Mexico favoring crowd of 79,156 witnessed 5 goals in the second half, as the Mexicans took control and reigned over the Americans.

Two of these five goals were made possible by two young forwards, Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela, who in their British club teams struggle to get regular playing time.

After having some difficulties with past World Cup qualifications, Mexico won the Gold Cup and reclaimed the championship of North American, Central American and Caribbean regions, but up ahead is the qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

For Mexico, Sundays win was a sign of hope for a country that has faced many recent struggles. The criticism of the media and fans stood on the players shoulders as they earned their victory. “It gives us a lot of confidence,” dos Santos said. “This win was a huge step forward. We’ve been working very hard despite a lot of criticism. We showed pride and a lot of heart today. Fans, like the media, will now believe in the national team.”

As for the United States, it was an embarrassing loss, despite the absence of Landon Donovan and Tim Howard as well as many other regular players who are being saved for the World Cup qualifier. But on August 12th, Mexico and United States alike must bring their A-game in order to prove they deserve a spot at the World Cup in South Africa.

Overall, Team USA is 0-22-1 in Mexico, but after their loss to Costa Rica in 2001, the Americans have hope. As the first three teams in their region automatically qualify, United States sits at second place, while Mexico is at fourth.
