Liverpool nearly suffered a humiliating loss in the Soccer Betting Champions League qualifying but they got an extra time goal to defeat Standard Liege 1-0 and move into the group stage. Dirk Kuyt scored the only goal between the two teams in the 28th minute of added time.  That was just two minutes before the game would have gone to penalties.  It was the only goal scored between the two teams since the first leg was a scoreless draw.

Liverpool can thank goalkeeper Pepe Reina or they would have suffered the loss.  He stopped Dieumerci Mbokani in the seventh minute and stopped Marouane Fellaini later in the match.  Liege goalkeeper Aragon Espinoza stopped Fabio Aurelio’s free kick and overall the Liege squad outplayed Liverpool.  Newcomer Robbie Keane continually missed the goal as did Steven Gerrard. "We knew it was a difficult team to play against," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "They played good on counterattack. It was difficult, but we were playing better than in the first leg." Liverpool Barely Advances in Champions League

In other Soccer Betting Champions League qualifying results, Greek champion Olympiakos is out after a 1-0 win against Anorthosis Famugusta that was not enough, as they lost 3-1 on aggregate.   Other teams advancing into the group stage were Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina and Marseille. Arsenal defeated FC Twente 4-0 and Marseille beat Brann 2-1 to advance. Atletico routed Schalke 4-0 while Fiorentina played to a scoreless draw against Slavia Prague but advanced thanks to a 2-0 win in the first leg.

Belarus will have its first representative in the group stage after BATE held Levski Sofia to a 1-1 draw and advanced 2-1 on aggregate. Levski Sofia had all kinds of chances but couldn’t get the game winner even with BATE playing with 10 men for much of the game. Dinamo Kiev rolled over Spartak Moscow 4-1 to advance.  The only Turkey team to advance was Fenerbahce as they defeated Partizan Belgrade 2-1 to advance 4-3 on aggregate. Steaua Bucharest beat Galatasaray 1-0 to advance. Danish side Aalborg had no trouble as they defeated Kaunas 2-0.  Shakhtar Donetsk beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 to advance and FC Basel advanced 2-1 over Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.
