Italian Fabio Capello is on the brink of becoming the new England manager. The news comes after Jose Mourinho pulled out of the running to take over from Steve McClaren.
Capello has his work cut out, England were awful in their attempts to qualify for Euro 2008 and are rated at 9/1 to win the 2010 World Cup with Bodog.
Now Mourinho is out of the race it has cleared the decks for Capello to take on the biggest job in football.
He is expected to meet FA chief executive Brian Barwick over the next few days. It is believed that Capello's advisors have already spoken to FA chiefs. The 61-year-old is expected to arrive London even though names like Marcello Lippi, Jurgen Klinsmann and Martin O'Neill are still being linked with the job. Capello has landed nine titles wins in a career that has witnessed periods at Juventus, AC Milan and Real Madrid. The Italian disciplinarian´s name has been linked with the job ever since McClaren's dismissal. However, it must be remembered that Capello cannot speak English which will surely hamper him in his early stages in the job, if not throughout the role. However, Capello probably has the finest CV among the current candidates. Capello has been unemployed since leaving Real Madrid last summer and he famously axed then recalled David Beckham to the Spanish club´s first team. There is a possibility and English speaking assistant could join Capello. Gianfranco Zola, who speaks good English following his time at Chelsea is a potential candidate. Interestingly, if installed, Capello's first game would be against Switzerland at Wembley in February 6, when Beckham could possibly win his 100th England cap.
