Boston looks like a shell of its former self right now, having lost four in a row and six of its last seven games. The Celtics extended skid has them sitting a game under .500 at 15-16 and in third place behind the 76ers and Knicks in the Atlantic standings.

Boston, which has just two games left in a five game road swing, has lost three of its last four games without Kevin Garnett (scheduled to return against the Thunder tonight) in the lineup. The latest team to take advantage of the short-handed Celtics was the defending champion Mavericks, who dumped Boston 89-73 in Dallas on Monday night.

The Celtics, who were also without point guard Rajon Rondo (suspended two games for throwing a ball at an official in Sunday’s 81-96 loss at Detroit), got 20 points from Paul Pierce and 15 from Ray Allen in the loss. Starting big men Chris Wilcox and Jermaine O’Neal combined for just two points (1-for-4 FG) and four rebounds.

Oklahoma City continued its steady if not spectacular play on Monday, winning its third straight game with a 101-93 defeat of the lowly Hornets at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. Kevin Durant, who scored 51 points in a 124-118 overtime win against the Nuggets on Sunday, led the Thunder with a 31 point, eight rebound night. Russell Westbrook notched 31 points as well while Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka both grabbed 13 boards to help give OKC a one rebound advantage on the glass.

The Thunder, now 25-7 with a 7.5 game lead in the Northwest standings, improved to 13-1 at home with their win over New Orleans. Despite that impressive record, OKC may be a bit nervous about tonight’s game. Boston seems to have the Thunder’s number away from the Garden, having won four of its last five on the road against Oklahoma City. Even more disturbing, though, is the fact that the Thunder are 1-9 straight up and 0-10 against the spread in their last 10 as a home favorite with a spread between 8 and 10.5 and a total between 185 and 190 points.

Despite the trade rumors swirling around swirling around big man Pau Gasol, the Lakers have managed to put together a nice little run over the last week and a half. Los Angeles has won four of it last five games to improve to 19-13 overall and it now trails the Pacific leading Clippers by just one game.

The Lakers latest triumph came on Monday night when they defeated the Trail Blazers 103-92 at the STAPLES Center. Gasol and center Andrew Bynum both recorded double-doubles in the victory, Gasol scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while Bynum tallied 14 points and 19 boards. Kobe Bryant scored a game high 28 points on 13-of-26 shooting and Steve Blake added 17 points of the bench after draining 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The Lakers ended a four game losing streak to the Mavericks when the two squads hooked at the STAPLES Center in mid-January. Los Angeles prevailed 73-70 in a game which the two teams combined to shoot just 36.5 percent from the field. Bryant and company will encounter a different Dallas team tonight, though. The Mavericks are one of the hotter teams in the league right now having won seven of their last eight games.

Dallas improved to 21-12 on Monday with a 89-73 whipping of the Celtics at the American Airlines Center. Boston, playing without Kevin Garnett, shot just 39.2 percent from the field and got out-rebounded 52-44 in the loss. The Mavs only had three players score in double figures, but a 26 point, 16 rebound night from Dirk Nowitzki proved more than enough to get them past the fading Celtics.

Dallas is 13-5 at home this season and has won four in a row at the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks are also 4-1 in their last five against the Lakers, who are 5-11 on the road this season, in Dallas.

San Antonio (23-9) is officially the hottest team in the league, having last tasted defeat in a January 29th overtime loss at Dallas. The Spurs have reeled off 11 straight wins since that setback and seven of those wins came without the services of Manu Ginobili. San Antonio will make another go of it this evening with Ginobili on the sidelines as the shooting guard re-strained an oblique in a 103-100 road win over the Clippers on Saturday night.

While Ginobili is an important cog in the Spurs offense, it is clear they have developed an effective style of play whether he is in the lineup or not. They proved so, once again, last night when they beat the Jazz, a 12-6 home team, 106-102 at the EnergySolutions Arena.

San Antonio got out-rebounded by Utah 41 to 33 and it made four fewer field goals in the game, but it made up for those deficits by nailing 10-of-21 from beyond the arc. The Spurs also had five players score in double figures, including Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, who combined for 43 points, 13 rebounds, and 14 assists.

Portland enters tonight’s game having lost six of its last nine games, and, shockingly, it has four of its last five at the Rose Garden. The Trail Blazers, however, still represent a major threat to the Spurs, particularly in Portland.

The Blazers, which lost to the Lakers 92-103 at the STAPLES Center last night, have won eight of their last 10 against the Spurs, including the last six between the two at the Rose Garden. Portland has also covered the number seven times in its last eight games against San Antonio as a host.

Despite the Trail Blazers recent success opposite the Spurs, it will need to snap out of its funk in order derail a hard charging San Antonio train. Yes, the Spurs are just 10-8 away from home this season, but they have won eight straight on the road, beating teams like Memphis, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles (Clippers). San Antonio is also 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 games as a road dog with a total between 190 and 195 points.

Guard Marcus Thornton also recorded a double-double, posting 21 points and 10 rebounds, but he connected on just one of his six three point attempts.

The narrow loss, which ended with rookie Kyrie Irving dropping two free throws in the final second of regulation, marked the Kings fifth straight defeat. Sacramento is now 3-16 on the road this season.

Miami, headed in the opposite direction of the Kings, won its sixth straight game on Sunday night by knocking off the Magic 90-78 at the AmericanAirlines Arena. The victory brought the Heat’s record to 25-7 and extended its Southeast Division lead to 4.5 games.

LeBron James recorded a near triple double in the win as he finished the game with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists, but Dywane Wade led the Heat in scoring with 27 points on 13-of-23 shooting. The only other Miami player to score in double figures was reserve forward Udonis Haslem, who tallied 10 points in 25 minutes of action.

The question tonight is, obviously, not whether or not the Heat will beat the Kings, but rather by how much. Recent history would suggest Miami will not cover the spread as it is 9-1 straight up but a mere 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 games as home favorite with a total between 200 and 205. However, Sacramento is just 2-8 opposite the number in its last 10 games as a road dog with a spread between 11 and 13.5 points. Given those two opposing trends, the safe choice here is to go with the surging home team covering against the road weary squad struggling to find its way.
