UFC 125 Resolution provided fight fans with a thrilling night of action; however, it did not live up to its moniker, at least in the main event, as lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard fought to a five round draw. The result allowed Edgar to retain his title, but his backers, as well as Maynard's, went away empty handed. UFC 125 Results featured four upsets, including former WEC champion Brian Stann's (+130 moneyline dog) first round TKO of Chris Leben. Dustin Poirier (+210), Diego Nunes (+200), and Jakob Volkmann (+165) all scored decision victories.
Frankie Edgar looked destined to lose his
belt after a first round battering by Gray Maynard. Maynard floored the champ, who appeared to be out on his feet for a brief stretch in the latter part of the round, numerous times in winning the opening frame 10-8. Amazingly, though, Edgar survived, demonstrating more than ever the heart for which he is known.
Edgar went on to win the second round and, according to one judge, the fight 48-46. The other two judges saw it as follows: 47-47 Draw and 48-46 for Maynard.
Edgar himself was also unsure who actually won the fight.
"It was a great fight," Edgar said. "Gray came in hard. $hit, I don't know."
Maynard, though, thought he was the victor, and said as much following the judges decision.
"I thought it was mine," Maynard said. "I thought I had the belt."
Regardless of Maynard's feelings, the official score failed to provide a true winner. That development prompted UFC President Dana White to declare at the post-fight press conference that Edgar and Maynard would meet for a third time in the near future. The winner of the fight was scheduled to face WEC Champion Anthony Pettis, but White indicated that battle would have to wait.
"In the UFC, we do the right thing, and the right thing is to put on this rematch," White said.
