Alexander Povetkin wears down Eddie Chambers

by Abe Luciano on Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Alexander Povetkin qualified as the rightful I.B.F heavyweight opponent to either Wladamir Klitschko or Sultan Ibragimov. Povetkin emerged as the unanimous decision winner by wide margins but the fight was far closer than the paid off judges scored it for the Sauerland promoted Povetkin. BodogLife.com had Alexander Povetkin -650 boxing betting odds.

Both fighters started at a fast clip from the opening bell, neither fighter being shy about unloading combinations with 100% effort. Chambers was the faster puncher and he landed the cleaner punches in the opening frame. Povetkin showed his power with some thudding bodyshots but Chambers was unaffected from the blows to his midsection.

Alexander Povetkin wears down Eddie ChambersIn rounds 2 through 4 Chambers employed a gloves high catch and counter style to perfection. Povetkin’s defense has a hole in it for right hands and Chambers hammered home some searing right hands off the Russian’s chin with regularity.

Povetkin was sporting a decent shiner by the third round, but he continued to string together combinations that Chambers skillfully deflected with his gloves. Chambers has an effective defensive technique in his repertoire; Eddie pulls back from his gloves high while remaining within punching range to counter. Around round 6 however, Povetkin started to figure out Chambers flat footed style. Displaying a strong chin, Povetkin was growing more confident with letting his hands go. BodogLife.com had the Over\Under at 9.5 rounds with the Over at -270 boxing betting odds.

Little by little, Povetkin started placing smart shots around Chambers high guard. Alexander was relentless, and he began to make effective use of angles in a workmanlike fashion. Chambers began to slow down as he started to feel the effects of Povetkin’s mean body assault. At some point I think Povetkin hit Chambers with something that took the wind out of Eddie Chambers sails. In the end the scores read: 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112. From my 60 inch HD TV I had the fight far closer at 115-113 Povetkin. Final Punchstat gave Povetkin a razor close 4 punch advantage, with Povetkin oulanding Chambers 201-197 total punches. Povetkin is a gutsy fighter with some skills but if he does end up fighting Wladamir Klitschko, I would make him a 3-1 dog at the least.
