UFC 81: Brock Lesner vs. Frank Mir Preview

by Steve Hastings on Thursday, January 31st, 2008

The former UFC and former Pride FC champions who are set to battle Superbowl weekend are not dominating the news, the reason is that two other belt holders of sorts are also battling the same night. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will take on Tim Sylvia for the Interm Heavyweight belt at next weekend’s UFC PPV, but Frank Mir, the now fallen former UFC Champion, and Brock Lesner, the pro-wrestling “champ,” will be the big fight of the night. BodogLife.com has Brock Lesnar as a -150 UFC 81 Betting favorite this weekend in the Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir fight.

With two belt olders of very different pasts: one pro-wrestling gold and another, a sad fall from grace. Here is a look at the chances each have at walking out of the cage this weekend with a win.

UFC 81: Brock Lesner vs. Frank Mir PreviewFrank Mir is 10-3, and coming off a very modest  win-streak of one. He is 2-2 in his last four fights after returning from a motorcycle accident that left him injured and beltless. He had just broken the arm of the possibly next UFC Heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia. His submission win to earn him the belt, or the 46 second victory of Tank Abbott would have you believe he could take out a guy who has only one MMA match to his name, but his lackluster performances of late and suspect cardio, call that theory into question.

It is also deceptive to say Brock Lesner has had only one MMA fight. While it is true that he is 1-0 in MMA, he was a college wrestling “stud,” and great practitioner who has been training MMA for well over a year now. His first victory on June 2nd of 2007, may have been the first of many wins to come.

One of his training partners, Nick “The Goat” Thompson, BodogFight Champion, has commented many times that Brock is a force to watch. Standing six foot two, will have an inch height and likely the weight advantage next week. A win for either really would set the victor on a path to the top.
