Armenian 112 LB. brawler Vic Darchinyan has a chance to redeem himself this weekend against Filipino Z Gorres in a 12-round I.B.F title eliminator. Darchinyan, 29-1-1, 23 KO’s, is considered as one of the hardest pound-4-punchers in boxing, but he was finally humbled last July by Nonito Donaire, when he was KO’d in spectacular fashion. Vic is a flat-flooted come forward brawler that slings bombs with both hands from the opening bell. Vic however, has no jab to speak of, and he leaves himself open for counterpunches with his reckless style. The 5’5” Darchinyan will also be stepping up a weight division for this fight, but Vic has been known to spar with middleweights in training with encouraging results, so weight should not be a problem.

Gorres, 27-2, 15 KO’s, is in his prime at 25 years-old and he will be pumped up fighting in front of his Filipino fans. The Philippines has developed into a boxing hotbed and the 5’4” slick boxing Gorres is the genuine article. Z is a crisp puncher that has fast reflexes and sterling combinations that score points. Gorres, 27-2, 15 KO’s, has a smart style sticking and moving but he is the smaller and less experienced fighter in this bout. Gorres’s style takes lots of energy and he has a tendency to wear down late which could be a problem against Darchinyan.

Gorres has once been stopped over 5 years ago against a light puncher, so his chin is also suspect. Darchinyan has blown out everyone not named Nonito Donaire, but has he recovered psychologically from his KO loss? Early money is on Darchinyan but is that based mostly on mae recognition more than anything?
