Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) TKOs Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KOs) in 5th Round Capturing WBO Title: Just as anticipated, Miguel Angel Cotto defeated Michael Jennings in dominating fashion by 5th round technical knockout, capturing the WBO title on Saturday night’s bout at Madison Square Garden.
Going into this bout, boxing expert oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com had Miguel Cotto [-1,500] as a huge Sports Odds favorite to defeat the underdog, Michael Jennings [+750]. "I studied my opponent for a few rounds, then I started to go to the body and to the head," Cotto said. "I hit him with some good shots."
It was everything we have gotten used to seeing from Cotto, and more. It almost seemed as though the Puerto Rican was letting out steam, from his 11th round technical knockout loss to Antonio Margarito last July 26 in Las Vegas. It was truly a one sided affair, and the Brit was never in this fight.
Not only did Miguel Cotto win every round, but he also seemed to be getting stronger as the fight went on. In the fourth, Cotto connected with vicious blows to Jennings’ body, bringing him to his knees twice. The Boriqua was in complete control, and Jennings was taking a severe beating. After the fourth round ended, it was evident that it was only a matter of time before Jennings visited the canvas for the last time. The OVER/UNDER for this Miguel Cotto vs. Michael Jennings fight had been estimated at 7½ total rounds.
At 2:36 in the 5th round, Cotto again dropped Jennings in a neutral corner. Jennings immediately looked to his corner as if to say ‘no mas’ but his handlers failed to throw in the towel. Instead and mercifully, referee Benji Estevez determined Jennings had enough and called it a night.
"He's a great fighter, the hardest puncher I've ever faced," Jennings said of his opponent. "He's very deceiving. You think you're out of his range and yet he strikes and connects. He really surprised me."
Cotto bounced back terrifically from what is now a tainted defeat against Antonio Margarito. Margarito had his license revoked by the California State Athletic Commission, which will keep him from fighting anywhere in the United States for a period year.
The Tijuana Tornado was found to have an illegal substance in his hand wraps before he lost by technical knockout against welterweight Shane Mosley on Jan. 24. Margarito’s trainer, Javier Capetillo accepted the blame, saying Margarito had no idea that there was anything improper in his wraps, which needed to be redone several times before the Mosley contest.
