At UFC 126 the favorites had their day, winning all but one fight (Forrest Griffin vs Rich Franklin); however, yesterday's UFC 127 Results in Sydney, Australia proved a different story. Six of the 12 fights went to the underdogs, including a shocking win for Russian Dennis Siver (+250) over fast rising Aussie lightweight George Sotiropoulos. The main event between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch, which was suppose to yield the next top challenger to Georges St. Pierre's welterweight throne, ended in a majority draw.
BJ Penn has always been known for his
freakish ground skills, but a take down artist he is not. The savvy veteran used that to his advantage in the early going last night, throwing off Jon Fitch with several round one take down attempts.
Penn succeeded on one such attempt and was able to lock in a body triangle on Fitch. The former Purdue wrestler eventually worked his way out Penn's hold, but the Hawaiian's uncharacteristic approach won him the round and helped him earn a decision in a fight he probably lost.
Fitch poured on the pressure in the third frame repeatedly getting Penn to the mat where he leveled heavy down doses of ground and pound to win the round.
Fitch admitted after that fight that Penn's surprising game plane probably led to the disappointing draw.
"B.J. had an excellent strategy. It threw me off, and it took me until the second round to counter-wrestle and get that in my head," Fitch said. "I thought he was going to come out counter boxing, and it kind of threw off what I was going to do."
Penn, never one to mince words, bluntly told UFC commentator Joe Rogan in a post-fight interview that his strategy was not enough. When Rogan asked Penn if he thought he won the fight, Penn responded with a resigned "No".
