On Monday, a 20-page document was filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, where Penn’s representatives seek sanctions against St. Pierre and his corner-men. In UFC 97's main event, (23-4) Anderson Silva [-525] is a huge Sports Odds favorite against (14-1) Thales Leites [+325].
The controversy began in the Octagon, between the first and second round of their UFC 94 fight. During which time, the NSAC was alerted to the inappropriate use of Vaseline by St. Pierre corner-man Phil Nurse. NSAC officials entered the cage and wiped GSP down with a towel to remove any possible grease remains. In UFC 97's co-main event of the night, (21-5) Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell [-175] is the Sports Odds favorite as he takes on (17-3) Mauricio "Shogun" Rua [+145].
The document doesn’t stop there, as it cites unnamed MMA fighters who've complained about St. Pierre’s use of greasing agents in previous bouts. “It is Penn’s belief… that the aforementioned strategies were intentional and were orchestrated by Pierre as a means to unfairly and illegally defeat Penn in a regulated and sanctioned championship bout that prohibits the aforementioned conduct and that such calculated actions by Pierre were implemented as a means to prevent Penn from defending himself in a manner consistent with that contemplated in unarmed combat due to the highly and unnaturally slippery nature of Pierre during the bout.”
The complaint requests the commission to fine St. Pierre, Jackson and Nurse up to $250,000. It also seeks for St. Pierre’s license to be suspended as well as the licenses of Jackson, Nurse, and others. In addition, Penn would like to change the result of the bout to “no contest” and require St. Pierre undergo a pre-bout shower routine to make sure no substances exist on his body.
