UFC 98: Lyoto Machida vs Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson Injured

UFC 98 Lyoto Machida (14-0) vs. Rashad Evans (18-0-1), Rampage Jackson Injured: UFC 98 is scheduled to take place on Saturday May 23rd live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Originally, the main event in UFC 98 was supposed to be the much-anticipated rematch between UFC heavyweight champion (3-1) Brock Lesnar, taking on former UFC champ, (12-3) Frank Mir. However, due to a knee injury and consequently arthroscopic surgery, Mir wasn’t able to take that fight leaving the main event spot vacant.

Luckily for the UFC, reigning undefeated UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans stepped up, and it was determined that if Quinton "Rampage" Jackson defeated Keith Jardine in UFC 96, which he did, Rampage would get a chance to regain his title belt in UFC 98 against Evans.

That is no longer occurring, as Jackson aggravated a jaw injury during his fight with Jardine. Jackson has been scheduled to undergo surgery sometime next week and will not be able to fight for at least 5 weeks following the operation. Consequently, we “Enter the Dragon”, as Lyoto Machida will finally get his much deserved opportunity to shine in the grandest of stages.

On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White announced that he would give the UFC light heavyweight title shot to the unbeaten Machida, setting up a battle of undefeated between “Sugar” vs. “The Dragon”. “Rampage deserved the (title shot), but this is an awesome main event,” White said of Evans-Machida. “A lot of people were complaining to me that Lyoto should have had the shot first. I think it’s going to be a great fight and Rampage can go get himself healthy.”
