You never quite know what you are going to get when a veteran aging champ meets a hungry young brawler but last night in Joel Casamayor vs Michael Katsidis, fans were treated to an instant classic. Before the bout started, the old lightweight champ Joel got in Katsidis’s face and let the young Australian know that he wasn’t letting his world title go easily on this night in Mexico.  BodogLife.com

Casamayor wasted no time introducing himself when the bell sounded, as Casamayor teed off, an fired 1-2 salvo’s into Katsidis’s mug. The young Aussie hit the deck twice courtesy of left hands in the opening round and was bleeding from his eye and nose but somehow managed to survive. For the next two rounds Katsidis gave chase but Casamayor was giving the kid a boxing lesson with classy veteran angles, shifts, jabs and dirty tactics from his southpaw stance.

The tide began to turn in Katsidis’s favor however around the 4th, when Katsidis began to land some heavy artillery into Casamayor’s brittle torso. Once Casamayor had lowered his hands from the body blows Katsidis landed a flush left hook that appeared to put Casamayor out on his feet in the middle of the ring for several seconds but Katsidis was unable to follow up.

In the 6th round Katsidis poured a brutal left hook into Casamayor’s ribcage that made the aging champ turn in agony as Katsidis followed up with a left and right to the head that knocked Casamayor completely out of the ring. The proud Cuban veteran mustered the courage to climb back in the ring and survive the attacking Australian. Casamayor showed his true grit as he won the next round and regained his respect against the blood thirsty young warrior.

Despite winning the 7th round, Casamayor had a vulnerable look to him and in the 9th round he was deducted a point for low blows as things began to look bleak. The point deduction however seemed to piss off the champ as he seemed to find a hidden energy reserve after the infraction. The end was sudden, spectacular, and dramatic. The 10th round began with Katsidis giving chase, when suddenly Casamayor gave a little angle and countered a Katsidis right hand with a haymaker left cross that Katsidis never saw.

The punch itself was devastating, as it landed with the impact of a high speed car accident into Katsidis’s jawline, leaving him in a bloody pile on the ring apron. Few knew that Casamayor possessed that kind of power. Maybe Casamayor’s old nemesis Diego Corrales sent him a respectful gift from the heavens to help the old man keep his title, who knows. Katsidis bravely staggered to his feet but Casamayor with his 450+ bouts of experience finished off the young lion as the referee waved off the fight at :30 of the 10th round.

BodogLife.com had the OVER\UNDER at 10.5 rounds with the UNDER at +160. The fight is an instant fight of the year candidate and Casamayor, 36-3-1 (22), is now in line for more big money paydays at age 36. Katsidis, 23-1 (20), is still young enough to recover at 27 and should get some more big money bouts with his exciting style. Casamayor vs Katsidis II? had Joel Casamayor as a +190 boxing betting underdog.
