BJ Penn vs Frankie Edgar UFC 112 Predictions, Odds & Picks

by Abe Luciano on Saturday, April 10th, 2010

BJ Penn vs Frankie Edgar UFC 112 Predictions, Odds & Picks: Two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world will be in action this afternoon, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship travels halfway across the world to celebrate its 112th MMA event. In the middleweight division, defending champion and sports betting odds favorite Anderson “The Spider” Silva [-875 ML] will look to cut down Jiu-Jitsu master Demian Maia [+575 ML] in an all-Brazilian battle.

In the co-main event, one of the most dominant fighters the UFC has ever seen will defend his belt, as sports betting odds favorite BJ “The Prodigy” Penn [-850 ML] faces off against rising star and sports betting odds underdog Frankie “The Answer” Edgar [+550 ML] with the UFC lightweight title up for grabs.

In what seems like an impossible feat, the young man out of Toms River, New Jersey will be trying to do something that hasn’t been done in almost a decade: beat the Prodigy at 155.

“It's very important to be mentally strong for a fight like this. You can prepare yourself physically, but if you fail in the mental side of things, it will all come undone," Edgar said. “I'm fighting a world champion and a great fighter in B.J. Penn. I'm not about to get overawed, though.”

With crisp striking and world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, BJ Penn is looking to clean out the lightweight division and perhaps vacate his title to move up to 170 and challenge UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre for a third time.

Ever since getting battered by the French-Canadian at UFC 94, that’s pretty much all Penn talks about, despite being 0-2 in fights against GSP. “If everything goes well on April 10, I definitely would consider moving up to 170 (pounds), not that it's 100 percent guaranteed,” Penn said.

Nevertheless, the pride of Hilo knows that underestimating a guy like Edgar could prove to be catastrophic to his plans of going after the welterweight title for a second time in his UFC career.

“I've said many times Frankie Edgar is not the guy to look past,” he added. “Anybody who looks past Frankie Edgar is going to end up with another loss on their record. This isn't the guy you play around with.”
