While Wladamir Klitchko is the #1 heavyweight in the world, there is a legitimate threat in the division named Kevin Johnson. The 6’4” Johnson scored the biggest win of his career this past Friday night on ESPN when he outclassed fringe contender Terry Smith by unanimous decision.

The 6’4” Johnson models himself after two great heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes and he does a damn good impression of both. Terry Smith was a worthy opponent with a rKevin Johnson The Next Heavyweight Champ?eputation as a tough customer but the New Jersey heavyweight Johnson made him look like an amateur. Smith tried to pressure Johnson throughout their 10-round heavyweight bout but was unable to land even a single clean punch on the defensive master Kevin Johnson all night long. Johnson incorporated a beautiful left jab while moving efficiently and countering Smith with fast lead right hands.

Smith showed his frustration by trying to rough up Johnson but Johnson showed great poise as he used a variety of classy old school moves to embarrass Terry Smith in front of his hometown crowd. Johnson is not a thrilling fighter to watch because of his reluctance to brawl but he is the best american prospect right now in the heavyweight division. At 235 Lbs. with an 82” reach and a smooth style, Kevin Johnson is a legit contender that could be the next champion if given the opportunity.
