Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin in UFC 101, It’s Official

by Abe Luciano on Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Anderson Silva (24-4) vs. Forrest Griffin (16-5) in UFC 101, It's Official: UFC 101, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 8th 2009 in Philadelphia, PA, now has another great main event in place; with the initial one being a lightweight title fight between B.J. Penn and No. 1 contender Kenny Florian.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s president, Dana White made good in his promise to bring Anderson “The Spider” Silva up a class to take on a legitimate threat, as his opponent will be fan-favorite and ex-light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin.

Considered by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Anderson Silva has been wildly criticized by seemingly everyone, including White, despite winning his last two bouts, for appearing to give a lackluster effort at best.

At UFC 97, just two weeks ago in Montreal, White said he was embarrassed by Silva’s performance in a decision victory over Thales Leites.

Back in October of ‘08 in UFC 90 in Chicago, Silva also registered another questionable victory after Patrick Cote suffered a freak accident on his knee, which disabled him from finishing the fight the right way.

Silva, who has now won a UFC record nine straight fights, has gone through the division like a knife through hot butter. White wants to change that, insisting he would find a suitable opponent for the Brazilian.

Despite earlier rumors that Silva would take on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, White truly believes he has done that, by signing Griffin. “Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is,” White said. “So we got the deal.”

Silva’s longtime trainer, Ed Soares, believes this will be a good challenge for his fighter. “It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”
