Georges St Pierre Trains with Freddie Roach

Georges St Pierre Trains with Freddie Roach: The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s reigning welterweight champion, (20-2-0) Georges St-Pierre is already considered by many the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old Canadian megastar believes his game has a lot of room for improvement, and thus, has decided to fill some of those voids.

St-Pierre’s path has led him to the doorsteps of Hollywood’s famed Wild Card Gym, home of Manny Pacquiao’s longtime trainer, Freddie Roach. “There are a lot of holes in my game,” St. Pierre said this week. “The people who say I am the best or that I cannot be any better, they are comparing me to other fighters. I compare me to myself, and I see a lot of things that I know I can do better.”

Riding a 7-fight win streak, St-Pierre is currently preparing to be the next UFC star to coach up-and-coming fighters on the 12th season of the reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter.” St-Pierre will put his teaching skills and strategic sense on the display against opposing coach Josh Koscheck, who he will face at the culmination of the show.

“It is time to focus on my boxing,” St. Pierre added. “When I get to the other side of my career I don’t want to be one of those fighters who have been hit too many times, so they keep getting knocked out. If you have the opportunity to work with someone like Freddy, you take advantage.”

But GSP isn’t the only one that’s a bit star-struck by this exciting union, as Roach feels this kid has all the tools needed to be just as dangerous with his hands as he’s lethal with his takedowns and on the ground.

“It’s a challenge for me as much as it is for him,” Roach said of working with GSP. “The footwork and the stances are different than what I’m used to working with. I’ve never looked at MMA the way some [in boxing] have. A fighter is a fighter and a good one is going to pick up knowledge from wherever they can and apply it as they can.

“Georges is such a tremendous athlete, and he’s such a fast learner. We were working at different distances and different angles than he’s used to fighting in MMA, but he picked it all up so fast.”
