Thiago Alves became only the second fighter in UFC history not to make weight (by four pounds) for his UFC 85 Results and Payouts showdown with Matt Hughes. As a matter of fact, Alves is lucky that this fight was not for a title, as it would have been an automatic scratch from the card. Dana White, UFC president, said: "I'm wondering if this kid [Thiago Alves] should be at 170 or not. If this were a title fight, I'd be really angry. What are you going to do? Matt Hughes agreed to fight him at 175, so it's not all bad. I can't wait to get this card behind me, to be honest with you. Eight guys dropped out [through injuries]. The main event guy can't make weight. It's crazy." In UFC 85 betting odds Matt Hughes was a -185 betting odds on favorite against Thiago Alves +145 with BodogLife.com. Consequently, if this were a title fight, Alves would have been even more upset, as he was able to  defeat one of the best fighters the UFC has ever seen in Matt Hughes. It all happened in the second round of this matinee main event. Thiago started round 2 with a devastating knee, which forced Hughes to pull guard. As Alves starts to “ground and pound” a significant cut opened on the ex-champion’s face. However, Hughes was able to get back up, but that was the turning point, as Alves unloaded an absolutely destructive flying left knee that send Hughes down on the mat for good. Thiago Alves then dropped continuous bombs on Hughes, defeating by TKO (due to strikes) at 1 min. 2 sec. In round #2.
