Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Shogun Rua UFC 104 Betting Odds: This week, UFC president, Dana White announced that UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida would make his first title-defense against fellow Brazilian Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as UFC 104 Betting Odds’ main event in Los Angeles, California.

“The next title shot is going to be Machida vs. Shogun and the fight is going to be at the Staples Center (in Los Angeles), Oct. 24,” stated White, announcing the UFC 104 main event.

Did you know that UFC 100, which is just around the corner, will have two UFC Championship titles on the line for the first time in history?

That’s right, in the UFC’s heavyweight division, Brock Lesnar is set to make his first title-defense against the only man to beat him in the Octagon, Frank Mir.

Also in UFC 100, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, UFC Welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre defends his crown against No.1 contender Thiago Alves, in what is guaranteed to be an instant classic.

Now, back to UFC 104 main event. As we all remember, Machida became the new UFC light heavyweight champ by viciously knocking out Rashad Evans in UFC 98. The victory boosted The Dragon’s record to a perfect 15-0 and his seventh straight victory in the Octagon.

“Chuck Liddell was no barn burner, Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, none of those guys were knocking people out and having exciting fights when they first came in,” White said about people calling Machida’s style boring. “I knew that it would be a little bit of a process before Machida felt at home.”

Shogun, once considered the best 205-pound fighter in the world, hasn’t really showed that same flare ferocity that made him so popular overseas. He made his UFC debut by losing to a then up-and-coming Forrest Griffin, by submission in the culminating seconds of their UFC 76 fight.

Rua followed that loss with a lackluster effort against an ancient Mark Coleman in UFC 93, where he was clearly in no shape to fight. Despite a TKO victory against The Hammer, and after taking much criticism, Shogun accepted White’s offer to take on “The Iceman”.

In that fight, Shogun had a much better showing, knocking out Liddell in what seemed his last fight in the UFC. Nevertheless and despite the victory, many questions remain.

“A year and a half ago, people were saying this guy is the best light heavyweight in the world. He’s still the same guy. What you have to understand is, he had a long layoff. He had a couple of knee surgeries,” White explained. “He looked good in the Liddell fight. The key to Shogun is keeping him busy.”
