The bantamweight championship is on the line this weekend as UFC belt holder Dominick Cruz faces former WEC lightweight champ Urijah Faber. The title bout will serve as the UFC 132 headliner, an 11 card event scheduled for this Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also on the docket is a middleweight scrap between Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben as well as a Tito Ortiz/Ryan Bader light heavyweight matchup. Sports Betting Odds have Cruz listed as a -150 moneyline favorite in this weekend's main event.
More than the title is on the
line this Saturday for UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. The San Diego native is also looking for revenge as Urijah Faber was the last fighter to beat him.
The pair fought for the WEC's lightweight title back in March of 2007; Faber easily retained his belt, scoring a first round submission over Cruz. Since that meeting their respective careers have headed in different directions. Faber went on to defend his title three more times, but he posted as 2-3 record after his final title defense, prompting a switch to 135lbs.
"The California Kid" is 2-0 after the drop in weight class with wins over Takeya Mizugaki and Eddie Wineland (UFC 128 – March).
Cruz reeled off seven straight wins following the Faber loss, a streak that remains intact heading into this weekend's battle. The 26 year old won the WEC bantamweight title in March of last year (now the UFC title) with a TKO win against Brian Bowles. He has successfully defended his belt twice since that victory.
Cruz' last fight came in December when he earned a unanimous decision victory over Scott Jorgensen. He sees more of the same coming at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday.
"I'm excited to go out there, beat up Urijah and represent the Mexican community strong."
Faber, though, sees things going differently, or the same depending perspective, as he feels he has all bases covered when it comes to Cruz.
"There's quite a few things that [he does] that are regimented," Faber said. "He moves the same direction quite a bit. He throws the same combos after some jabs. He ends with low kicks. He throws a lot of right hand-right kick combos…there's a real method to his madness and I've seen a ton of his tapes, I've been in the corner when he's fought, I've fought him, so I'm pretty savvy to what he's doing."
