UFC 116: Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin Fight Picks & Predictions

UFC 116: Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin Fight Picks & Predictions: After watching Fedor Emelianenko get stunned by Fabricio Werdum last weekend, the Ultimate Fighting Championship believes that the biggest fight in UFC history will determine who is the best heavyweight on the planet. Competing for this title are none other than undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar [-130 ML] and undefeated, interim title-holder Shane Carwin [EVEN].

“I just see another opponent,” stated the UFC champion this week. “I’m not threatened by anybody in this entire world. He’s knocked a few trash cans over along the way, he’s a big guy, he’s got some wrestling ability, but this is my time. This is my era and I just don’t see him being the guy to take this all away from me.”

UFC 116 happens tonight, from a sold-out and wild MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and you can catch all the action live on pay-per-view. This will be the very first time that we’ll see Brock Lesnar back in the Octagon since his destruction of Frank Mir at UFC 100.

“I’ve been kinda like a steam locomotive ever since January 5th,” Lesnar added. “We threw a little coal in the fire, we got the engines going a little bit, and every week, the locomotive kept building more steam and building more power, and that’s really what this has been. Everything’s coming together, and I’ve said this before – the Brock Lesnar now would annihilate the Brock Lesnar of a year ago.

“That’s how crazy this is. I had to have a major setback, and it was almost a good thing. We started from scratch in January and really built my strength, my core, and I was able to work on a lot of different things, and I wasn’t under any pressure. I brought different training partners in and got a different look from some different coaches. We got this piece of clay, and we said let’s mold it again.”

In a lot of ways, this Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin fight represents the battle between good vs evil, respect vs cockiness. As we all know, Brock Lesnar has been public enemy No.1 from the first day he set foot on the UFC. Embracing the role of villain, Lesnar has made his way through the UFC heavyweight rankings, crushing every opponent that has stood in his way after his loss to Frank Mir in his UFC debut.

But with everything that has happened to Lesnar over the last 6 months, the “Next Big Thing” appears to have a different outlook and appreciation for life, as well as the sport he loves.

“At any moment this could be over and I could be Joe Blow serving burgers or doing whatever,” Lesnar said. “Anything can happen at any given moment, and I try to live every day to the fullest, and I really don’t take anything for granted anymore. I never really used to, but this whole setback for me last November was a hurdle in my life that I guess God thought I had to overcome to test me and to make sure this is what I really wanted in my life. There are challenges in your life that are put before you for certain reasons, and this was one of those times.”

In contrast, Shane Carwin is soft-spoken, respectful of his opponents and handles himself like a gentleman. Nevertheless, once that cage door closes tonight, Carwin becomes an animal. With knockout power on either hand, Carwin will try and show the world that fighters don’t have to be bullies and extra-cocky to be great.

“Its business as usual,” Carwin assures. “The main thing and the things that I like to focus on are myself and improving myself. That’s where I think the biggest gains for me can be in a fight – making myself a better fighter rather than trying to prepare myself for who I’m fighting against and their strengths. I believe that I can increase my strengths in all the areas that much more.”

According to the former NCAA Division II wrestling champ, the world is going to see Brock Lesnar laid out on the canvas come Saturday night! “I really don’t focus that much on my opponent,” Carwin adds. “I know its Brock, but honestly, this camp has been a little bit quieter than the rest of the camps. It’s either that or maybe I’m used to it.

“There was the Countdown and all that stuff with (Gabriel) Gonzaga and then the same thing with (Frank) Mir, and it seems like that stuff was shorter and easier this time. It’s just like anything – it becomes second nature. All that stuff is part of it, so when producers come in I have a good time with them and we have fun and they know that if they come to my camp, they’re gonna get a couple bodyshots. (Laughs) But it’s actually been like the calm before the storm.”

But for a guy that’s averaging less than a minute and 10 seconds in the Octagon every time he fights, many have to wonder what will happen if this fight reaches the championship rounds?

“I get that question a lot and it always leads into something else,” Carwin laughed. “It’s still the question about my cardio. Until it’s proved, people are always gonna have those questions, and even when that happens there will be a question about something else. It’s just the nature of the beast, I guess.”
