Georges St. Pierre UFC 100 Fighter Profile: The new wave and the future mold of professional mixed martial artists; is what UFC welterweight champion (18-2-0) Georges "Rush" St. Pierre has been called by many who follow the sport of MMA from a close range.
In Saturday night’s historic UFC 100, the French-Canadian also known simply as G.S.P will be taking on No.1 title contender, Thiago "Pitbull" Alves in what promises to be one of the best UFC fights to date.
UFC 100 will give GSP the chance to defend his title once again in a stacked UFC welterweight division. According to UFC 100 Betting Odds makers at Bodog.com, Georges St. Pierre [-315 ML] will retain his welterweight title in UFC 100, as he has been projected to be the victor of his UFC 100 bout against a very tough underdog in Thiago Alves [+235 ML].
St. Pierre, who’s already considered to be one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, is often mentioned in the same breath with names like middleweight/light heavyweight Anderson Silva (UFC champ) and Affliction’s heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko. But GSP’s story begins a little different and much less glamorous, and yet with so many things in common.
The French-Canadian St. Pierre has been defending himself from a very young age, learning (Kyokushin) Karate at the age of 7 with the hopes of scaring away school bullies that would steal his clothes and money. This was just the beginning for GSP, as he also took up wrestling, boxing, as well as training at the highly respected Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York City. In order to pay for his school fees and training, GSP worked as a bouncer and even as garbage man for six months, in the cold streets of Canada.
Thus, St. Pierre has had the opportunity to train with many great fighters, as he received his brown belt in BJJ from Renzo Gracie in 2006. In September of 2008, GSP finally earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Bruno Fernandes. He has also trained with many skilled MMA fighters, such as Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine, at Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting Gaidojutsu School in New Mexico.
At the moment, he is training in Muay Thai at the Wat in New York City, under coach and cornerman, Phil Nurse. Nurse is also the man accused of applying Vaseline to GSP’s neck and back in between rounds of his rematch against BJ Penn in UFC 94.
Georges St Pierre entered the UFC in 2004, as he made his debut by defeating Karo Parisyan by unanimous decision in UFC 46. Fights to follow were versus Jay Hieron at UFC 48, where he won by TKO in the first round, and Matt Hughes at UFC 50, which became his first loss in the UFC by tapping out due to an armbar.
In UFC 58, GSP became the number-one contender for the UFC welterweight title, after defeating BJ Penn by what many considered a controversial decision.
At UFC 65, GSP challenged champion Matt Hughes to a rematch. This time, GSP ended the fight via TKO, after kicking Hughes on the left side and unloading a relentless beating of elbows and punches, as Hughes took major damage.
Nevertheless, he had a short reign, as he lost to Matt Serra at UFC 69, in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. In 2007, GSP focused on fighting his way back into title contention. In UFC 83, GSP defeated Matt Serra by TKO with some perforating knees to the side of Serra, regaining his UFC welterweight title back.
Since then, St. Pierre has successfully defended his UFC welterweight title against very tough opponents (18-3-0) Jon Fitch, and most recently lightweight champion, (13-5-1) BJ Penn. His next challenger will be indeed his toughest, as Thiago “Pitbull” Alves will present a series of unprecedented challenges for him.
