Affliction Trilogy Canceled, UFC & Affliction Merge

Affliction Trilogy Canceled, UFC & Affliction Merge: It was only a matter of time before Affliction waived the white flag and wised up about joining forces with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, rather than continuing to swim against the current.

After canceling its “Affliction: Trilogy” August 1st, pay-per-view event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA, Affliction decided it was best to get out of the promotional business. But the move was far from voluntary, as the company’s hand was forced after its main event — between WAMMA heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko vs. former UFC title-holder Josh Barnett — quickly turned to mush.

The featured title match wasn’t to be, as Barnett was denied a license to fight by the California State Athletic Commission after he tested positive for an anabolic steroid less than two weeks before the Affliction bout.

With no one available to replace Barnett, Affliction had no choice but to fold, but in the process made a wise decision.

Last Friday, Affliction released a statement announcing 'a collaboration with the UFC'. “Our brand is synonymous with the ‘Live Fast’ approach to life and UFC is the perfect venue for us to market our brand. We have come to an agreement with the UFC which we feel will be the best for the sport and will help the UFC continue delivering the highest caliber of fights,” said Eric Foss, co-founder of Affliction.

As part of the deal, the UFC is likely to pick up the contracts of all Affliction fighters except for Emelianenko’s. The Russian’s future remains unknown, as he and UFC president Dana White continue to go back and forth through the media, as they negotiate a deal for Emelianenko to fight in the UFC.
