When you look at Gina Carano, one does not think female fighter. But as cliché as it sounds, do not judge a book by its cover. Carano has athleticism in her genes, as her father was the backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 1977-1983.
Carano was not always into fighting. She graduated from Trinity High School in Las Vegas, where she played basketball and helped her team become state champions. She then continued to the University of Nevada, where she started a degree in psychology.
Her fighting career began with muay thai Kickboxing, where she trained under Master Toddy. It is said that she got into Muay-Thai, because of her former boyfriend, Kevin Ross. After a successful career in Muay Thai, Carano moved on to the MMA in 2006 with EliteXC. Carano also made her appearance on the NBC TV show American Gladiators, where she was known as “Crush”.
Carano has a strong jab and has improved her ground skills, and this was evident when she defeated Tonya Evinger by a rear naked choke in 2007. She must now take on the extremely strong Brazilian fighter, Cyborg, in a fight that is set up to make history for women's fighting.
