UFC 102 Results: It was supposed to be Randy Couture’s homecoming, but instead it was a Brazilian Carnival, as both main events at UFC 102 Results were dominated by South Americans last night in Portland, Oregon. Going into the main event of the night, UFC 102 Results specialists had Randy Couture [-175 ML] listed as the sports betting odds favorites to defeat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira [+145 ML].
With the ink still runny in his new UFC six-fight contract extension, the hometown hero received a huge standing ovation from the many in attendance at the Rose Garden Arena last night. However, this wasn’t to be his night, as
Big Nog came in looking as good as ever. "I know I fought a guy who was important (to the Portland crowd)," a gracious Nogueira said. "I respect Randy. … He's one of my idols in the UFC."
The former Pride champ dominated the fight from beginning to end, as he won every hard-fought round. After three very exciting, action-packed rounds of fighting, Nogueira earned a one-sided, unanimous decision victory. From the beginning of the bout, it was clear that The Natural’s gameplan was to stand with Minotauro, and the Brazilian obliged.
"I had a lot of injuries (with) my neck, my knee and everything," Nogueria said. "I want to be the top fighter in the UFC. I want to win a title belt. If you guys gave me a chance to fight Brock Lesnar, it would be my pleasure." Nogueira would be next in line for a title shot against UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar (should he get passed Carwin in Nov), who was in attendance along with middleweight champ Anderson Silva last night sitting cage side.
Couture was beaten on every facet of the fight: he exchanged with the Brazilian and he got rocked several times, he was even outpowered on the ground by a stronger jiu-jitsu specialist, as the bout could have been stopped several times. "I'll let the dust settle, take a week and see what the UFC wants to do," stated Couture. "I'm here, and I'm ready to fight. I feel the best I've ever felt."
Nevertheless, I can’t help but to give credit to the ageless wonder, Captain America, as he was clearly fighter a better man that night, but he stood in there, avoiding submission after submission attempts, hard blows and some vicious ground-and-pound. Many speculate that perhaps Couture’s best move would be to move down a class to the highly competitive, UFC light heavyweight division.
“I'm going to take it one fight at a time as I did 12 years ago when I started this thing," Couture said after UFC 102 Results. "I'll see where that goes… I didn't have the outcome that I wanted, but I still had a good performance, overall. I did a lot of things that I trained to do for this fight. We'll evaluate that, evaluate the training and see what fight is next and take it one at a time."
