Shane Mosley KOs Ricardo Mayorga in 12th Round: The bout between Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga went down to the wire Saturday night at The Home Depot Center in Southern California. Everyone anticipated this fight to be an easy win for Shane Mosley. However, it was anything but that considering the talent level.Odds-makers at BodogLife.com favored Shane Mosley (-800) all the way against Ricardo Mayorga (+500).
The California native struggled to put away a relentless Ricardo Mayorga. The Nicaraguan’s wild fighting style made it very difficult for Shane to finish him off, and thus, “El Matador” almost made it the distance.
It was in the culminating seconds of the 12th round that “Sugar” Shane finally wore down a tough Mayorga. After dropping Mayorga to his knees, just 15 seconds remained in the fight. Mayorga was able to beat out the count, but appeared to be gone despite getting up in time.
Before Mayorga could even realize what was about to happen to him, Mosley connected with a devastating left at 2:59 of the final round to win by a way of KO. The OVER/UNDER for this Mosley-Mayorga fight had been set at a total of 7.5 rounds.
After the fight was over, Mosley explained his problems with putting Mayorga away: “Mayorga is a tough fighter, he took some good shots, but I wore him down. He was a lot heavier than me. He put on at least 10 pounds. I caught him with the side of my right hand and an uppercut, so I knew I hurt him and he got wobbly,” Mosley said. “I felt him getting weaker during the fight, but he was trying to stay strong. I felt I was winning the fight and he stole a few rounds. But I wanted the knockout. I wanted to give the fans what they deserved, and that was a knockout.”
A disappointed Ricardo Mayorga also spoke after the fight, and acknowledged Mosley’s punching power: “I was proud of the way Shane came to fight. He didn’t run. I thought I was doing well, and I came out to win the 12th. But he caught me. I will tell you one thing—he hit harder than I thought he would.”
With the victory, the 37-year old, Mosley could get another title shot in the near future. He addressed the issue: “I have to try and find fights now. I don’t want to wait around for Cotto and Margarito. I know they have plans. I know Margarito is here watching. It was interesting.”
