UFC 124 Betting Odds & Predictions Thiago Alves vs John Howard: The UFC returns to action this weekend with a battle for the welterweight championship at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. In addition to the headling fight between Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck, the event also features a welterweight clash between former top contender Thiago Alves and up and comer John Howard. Alves, who once fought St. Pierre for the welterweight crown, is a UFC 124 Betting Odds & Predictions moneyline favorite (-300) at online bookmaker BetUS.com.
Not too long ago, Thiago Alves looked to
be on a collision course with the welterweight title. Alves lost two of his first four UFC fights, but won seven in a row from October of 2006 to October of 2008, beating the likes of Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck, and Chris Lytle to earn a crack at St. Pierre. The Brazilian looked over-matched, as most competitors do, against the champion, losing the five round match by unanimous decision.
Alves looked even worse in his last fight, a rematch with Jon Fitch that took place in August. The "Pitbull" failed to make weight for the match, something that has been an issue for him, and generally looked sluggish as Fitch controlled the fight throughout.
Now the hard hitting American Top Team product is battling to maintain his relevance in the division and put himself back in the title mix as well. That reality has Alves more focused than ever.
"I tried to change my whole lifestyle," Alves said. "I'm going to set the example, I'm going to be serious, and I'm going to do what it takes. I will make it happen."
Alves will face a difficult challenge in John Howard, who brings a 4-1 UFC record into the Octagon this Saturday. The 27 year old Boston native is a well-rounded fighter with knockout power.
Howard lost his last fight via doctor's stoppage (eye) to Jake Ellenberger back in August, but prior to that he recorded TKO wins over Daniel Roberts and Dennis Hallman.
Given the aggressive nature of both fighters, this skirmish should be highly entertaining. The edge has to go to Alves, though, who will probably finish the fight inside of the three rounds scheduled.
UFC 124 will take place this Saturday, December 11th at 10:00pm ET. The 11 fight event can be seen live on Pay-Per-View.
