Joshua Clottey earned the right to face I.B.F welterweight champion Kermit Cintron with a 12 round unanimous decision over Shamone Alvarez. Clottey was a -365 boxing betting favorite at BodogLife.com. Alvarez showed some decent boxing skills from his southpaw stance but Clottey continually landed thudding body shots throughout. Alvarez stayed busy with a good punch output but the Ghana native Clottey, 33-2, 20 KO’s, is a very strong fighter. Alvarez landed his share of pitty pat punches but Clottey was never hurt, as he walked through the weak shots and hammered home the more telling punches throughout. Alvarez, 19-1, 11 KO’s, was handed his first loss as a professional but he showed good conditioning and a tricky style that could give most guys problems. Final scores read: 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 all for Clottey. Clottey’s win pits him against Cintron, 29-1, 27 KO’s, who looked vulnerable in his last fight against Jesse Feliciano. Despite Cintron’s shaky performance against Feliciano, Kermit is a monster puncher and he should be about a 7-5 boxing betting favorite against Clottey.
On the undercard, 6'9" 262 Lb. giant white hope heavyweight Tye Fields made quick work of overmatched Chris Koval. Fields was a -1000 boxing betting favorite at BodogLife.com. From the opening bell Fields, 39-1, 35 KO’s, came right at the 277 Lb. soft looking Koval with a volley of sharp punches to the head and body from his southpaw stance. Koval, 24-4, 18 KO’s, tried to fight back but the end came when a left cross to the mid section followed by a flush left cross to the face planted Koval on his back for several minutes. Koval looked in obvious pain from the punches and Fields who has been labeled as an arm puncher proved that he has some pop. Tye is trained by well esteem trainer Jesse Reid who has done a good job developing Fields into a decent technical fighter. After the bout Reid stated that Fields is ready for anybody willing to fight him in the heavyweight division.
