Tito Ortiz to Fight in Strikeforce? The “Huntington Beach Bay Boy” (15-6-1) Tito Ortiz is still looking for an employer, as he prepares to make his anticipated comeback into MMA -- in approximately six months -- after undergoing major back surgery in late 2008.

The former UFC light heavyweight champ has been negotiating with numerous organizations, which include Affliction and now Strikeforce, after departing from the UFC after a longtime beef with UFC president and former manager, Dana White.

Ortiz, technically under contract with The Ultimate Fighting Championship until May of ‘09, was seen sitting cage-side in San Jose, CA, as he attended "Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz".

The ever-imposing Ortiz, who’s never been shy about voicing his opinion, was featured as a guest-speaker at the post-event’s press conference where he revealed to be "in dialogue" with the company.

"We are in dialogue, and we look forward to Tito fighting for Strikeforce," the company’s CEO Scott Coker said. "We'd love to have him here in San Jose. I think our fans would really appreciate Tito fighting in San Jose."

The Southern California native went on to disclose that he has already began strength-training routines. "I actually just got (cleared) from my doctor to start doing my weight training, which I've been doing the last seven days," he said. "I kind of need to hold myself back a bit because I want to go harder. But the doctor says, 'Take your time. Take your time.'

"I'm six months out now,” said Ortiz. “I've got about another month-and-a-half or two months and I can start wrestling again."

He also went on to express his excitement about the possibility of this becoming a reality. "I want to thank Showtime/CBS, Scott Coker, Ken Hershman, and all the rest of the gang for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to possibly be on free television on CBS and possibly here on Showtime -- possibly pay per view, also," Ortiz said. "I'm excited to get back in a cage and compete and give all of my fans the best that I do."

"I want to compete," Ortiz said. "I want to be on CBS for free, give my fans a free fight, and get on pay per view and get a title around my waist again. 'Baba-who' is holding it on, so I would like to take it from him. He's a great fighter, but we have our words. It's going to be awesome to compete again and be 100 percent… I'm amped. I can't wait."

This weekend's UFC 97 will feature two great main events, headlined by the return of the reigning pound-for-pound king, (23-4) Anderson “The Spider” Silva [-675 ML] to the Octagon, as he defends his UFC middleweight title for a record 5th time against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, (14-1) Thales Leites [+475 ML]. In the co-main event of the night, the “Iceman” (21-6) Chuck Liddell [-200 ML] is in desperate need of a victory, as he looks to remain relevant in the UFC. Liddell will be taking on Brazilian superstar, (17-3) Mauricio “Shogun” Rua [+160 ML], who’s coming off a rather lackluster TKO victory against 44-year-old, (15-9) Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.

Oscar De La Hoya Calls it Quits PDF Print E-mail

Oscar De La Hoya Calls it Quits: One of boxing’s most recognized and beloved figures, Oscar De La Hoya, announced his retirement from the sport in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. “The Golden Boy” decided to end a brilliant career in which he won an Olympic Gold Medal and 10 professional world-boxing titles in six different divisions.

The 36-year-old product of East Los Angeles announced his decision at an outdoor plaza across the street from Staples Center in downtown LA, where his Golden Boy statue stands alongside that of Lakers’ great Magic Johnson and the legendary Wayne Gretzky.

"I've come to the conclusion that it's over," De La Hoya admitted before hundreds of fans. "It's over inside the ring for me," the Golden Boy continued.

Oscar is coming off the worse defeat of his professional boxing career, as the reigning pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao, beat him to submission four months ago.

After the fight, De La Hoya sounded pretty convinced when he simply said: "I don't have it anymore..."

But even after beating The Golden Boy into retirement, in a moment that will certainly go down in history as an example of what he has ment to the sport of boxing, a humbled Pacquiao looked at De La Hoya in the eyes and said: "you're still my hero!"

That loss marked De La Hoya’s fourth loss in his final seven bouts, as he finishes his career with a record of 39-6 with 30 knockouts. "This is the love of my life, boxing is my passion, boxing is what I was born to do," he stated. "When I can't do it anymore, when I can't compete at the highest level, it's not fair. It's not fair to me, it's not fair to the fans, it's not fair to nobody."

According to the future Hall of Famer, he based his decision on not wanting to let down his fans or himself. But he admitted he struggled to make the final decision. "Now I understand why athletes have such a tough time retiring from something that you feel so passionate about, from your sport that you're always thinking you can try one more time," he said.

"I can still train hard and I can still compete, but when you're an athlete that has competed on the highest level for a lot of years, it's not fair. It's not fair to step inside the ring and not give my best."

When thanking his father, Oscar’s voice broke a bit, as emotions almost got the best of him: "I remember the times when he would take me to the gym and never gave up on me. We've lived some tough moments inside the ring, we've been through everything, but my father was always there for me. Thank you for pushing me as hard as you can."

Paul Williams Defeats Winky Wright by Unanimous Decision PDF Print E-mail

Paul Williams Defeats Winky Wright by Unanimous Decision: In this weekend’s HBO middleweight, non-title fight from The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Paul Williams battered Winky Wright on his way to a fairly easy unanimous decision victory.

Going into this fight, oddsmaking Boxing experts at SBGglobal.com had listed Paul Williams [-200 ML] as a heavy favorite in his bout against the aging Winky Wright [+160 ML] Saturday night.

The once impenetrable defense of Wright was no match for Williams’ speed and power, as seemingly everything as getting trough and landing on Winky’s mug.

It was clear from the start that this fight was going to be a one-sided affair and it was only a question of: how long would Wright last in the ring with this visibly faster, longer man?

Williams threw punches like there was no tomorrow in this fight. He constantly worked Wright’s head and body from the opening bell. Williams’s superiority was evident as Winky, who was coming off a 21-moth layoff, was no match.

The Georgia native threw so many punches that Wright simply didn’t have time to land enough blows during the entire bout. Williams threw 104 punches in the first stanza and 106 in the final one, as he remained very active throughout the fight. “I felt like I did in the first round in the 12th,” Williams said. “That was because of my hard training, and running seven miles a day. It helped my breathing.” Williams threw 104 punches in the first round and 106 in the 12th, rarely taking a break in between.

In the end, one judges scored the bout, 119-109 in Williams’ favor and another one gave every single round to Williams, 120-108. When it was all said and done, Williams threw 1,086 punches and connected 23%, doubling Wright’s total amount of punches thrown (511). “I just couldn’t get my punches off,” Wright said. “He was very tall and awkward with really long arms. He would throw a lot of punches, and they were coming from all different directions, and I didn’t know how to dodge them. I had a long layoff, but I felt this was a great fight.”

Paul Williams vs Winky Wright Fight Odds Preview PDF Print E-mail

Paul Williams (36-1, 27 KO’s) vs. Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KO’s) Fight Odds Preview: The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be the sight for this non-title middleweight bout between Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright, and it can be seen live on regular HBO.

According to Online Boxing oddsmakers at SportsBook.com, the younger fighter, Paul Williams [-200 M.L.] has been listed as the Sports Odds favorite to be the victor in his middleweight fight against underdog, Winky Wright [+160 M.L.].

The 27-year-old Williams still has much to prove despite having all the tools to become a Hall of Fame fighter. Wright, 37, is currently on the back end of a brilliant boxing career, which will certainly secure him a spot in the Hall of Fame. Nevertheless, it’s easy to understand why all the pressure would squarely be on Williams to produce.

Tonight’s HBO telecast opens up with a great documentary on Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier 3 fight at 8 PM ET (5 PM PT), followed by the first look at “24/7: Pacquiao-Hatton”.  HBO’s Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright Fight Odds Preview kicks off with what should be a very entertaining heavyweight bout between Cristobal Arreola and Jameel McCline at 10 PM ET.

Thus far, Williams has put together an impressive 36-1 record, and has already avenged his only loss by knocking out Carlos Quintana in the first round of their rematch. Nevertheless, Williams has failed to become a main fan-attraction, as reflected by his ticket sales. Few, however, of Williams’ fights have left fans wanting more and he’s yet to prove his name on a marquee will translate into ticket sales.

So what is Williams doing to chance that? He is promising an exciting scrap, as he intends to stand to-to-toe with Winky until someone goes down. “He can block. He can jab (but it won’t matter),” Williams said. “He’s going to have to come fight me. That will leave him open for shots. That’s what I’m looking for. I’m not looking to sit around and wait. I’m going to make him work. … I come to fight. And he knows that.

“It’s going to be an explosive fight. It’s not going to be boring, because he’s blocking. I’m going to hit him and make some openings.”
