The PGA Tour is in Miami, Florida this week for the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The event, which is scheduled to get underway tomorrow morning, will be hosted at the TPC Blue Monster Golf Course at Doral. 2012 WGC-Cadillac Championship Odds have new No. 1 Rory McIlroy listed as a +450 moneyline favorite to win the tournament. Tiger Woods, who now sits 16th in the Official World Golf Rankings, is a close second on the odds leaderboard at +500 moneyline odds.
Rory McIlroy moved from second to first in the Official World Golf Rankings last weekend with his winning turn at the Honda Classic. The Irishman, the favorite to win the event at +700 odds, passed long standing No. 1 Luke Donald after posting a 12 under par score of 268 at the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
McIlroy, who scored under par in each of the four rounds, held off a furious fourth round rally from Tiger Woods. Woods, who opened the tournament with a one over par 71, shot a blistering 62 on Sunday. The 14 time major winner recorded eagles on holes three and 18 and he birdied holes five, seven, eleven, and seventeen to close out play with a 10 under par 270.
Woods, who finished 10th at last year’s WGC-Cadillac Championship (eight under par 280), appears to be regaining the form that made him the world’s top golfer for so many years. The Stanford product placed first at the Chevron World Challenge last December and he has followed that performance with third, 15th, 17th, and second place finishes.
Despite Woods return from the ash heap, besting McIlroy this weekend remains a huge task. The 22 year old has been in impeccable form all season long, recording two second place finishes and a fifth place result to go along with last Sunday’s Honda Classic victory.
Phil Mickelson, who tied for 55th at last year’s WGC-Cadillac Championship with a four over par 292, is listed behind McIlroy and Woods as the third favorite to take home the first place share of this weekend’s $8,500,000 purse. Last year’s champion, 30 year old California native Nick Watney, is listed at +2500 odds to defend his title.
