Odds to win the Masters 2012

by Matt Foust on Sunday, April 1st, 2012

tiger woods green jacketGolf’s biggest tournament gets underway this Thursday, April 5th as the PGA Tour makes its way to the Augusta National Golf Club and the odds makers have posted their Odds to Win the Masters 2012. The chase for the Green Jacket, which features an $8,000,000 purse, will be broadcast live on ESPN and CBS. The latest Golf Odds, shockingly, have Tiger Woods listed as a favorite to win the event at +275 moneyline odds. The red hot Rory McIlroy also finds himself a highly valued commodity; the Northern Ireland native is presently listed at +375 odds to win the second major championship of his young career. Last year’s Green Jacket winner, South African Charl Schwartzel, is drawing +2500 moneyline odds to defend his championship.

Two weekends ago Tiger Woods lifted a huge weight from his own shoulders as he registered his first PGA Tour win in over 30 months. Woods topped the field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida with a 13 under par 275.

The victory, which ran Woods PGA Tour win total to 72, featured 20 birdies, 46 pars, and a particularly impressive second round score of 65. It also served notice that the Achilles issue which ended Woods run at the World Golf Championships on March 11th was not as serious as initially feared.

Given the impressive showing at Bay Hill, Woods figures to be a factor at Augusta this week. Tiger, even with his recent struggles, has finished no worse than sixth at the Masters since 2004.

Rory McIlroy, conversely, has never finished better than 15th in three Masters entries. That placement came last year when the 22 year old shot a four under par 284. McIlroy played brilliantly through two rounds of action, which resulted in his leading the field heading into Saturday, but he faltered on the event’s final day, posting an eight over par 80.

Using McIlroy’s lack of success at Augusta as a barometer for how he will perform this weekend would be a mistake, though. The Holywood native, who currently sits atop the Official World Golf Rankings, has two wins this season and he has finished no worse than 11th in seven events played.

Other favorites this weekend include big names in Phil Mickelson (+900), Luke Donald (+1150), Lee Westwood (+1450), and Adam Scott. Mickelson, a four time major winner and owner of two Green Jackets, is the only one of that group to have won a major golf championship.
