Odds to win the Open Championship 2012

tiger claret jugThe Masters concluded less than a week ago and the season’s second major, the U.S. Open, will not take place until June 14th, but the odds makers at Bovada.lv have, nonetheless, weighed in on the 2012 Open Championship (July 19th). Golf Odds at the book maker have Tiger Woods listed as a 6 to 1 favorite to win his fourth Claret Jug. Current Race to Dubai money leader, Rory McIlroy, is pegged at 7 to 1 odds to capture his first Open Championship while 2012 Green Jacket winner Bubba Watson is listed at 33 to 1 odds to top the British Open Leaderboard.

Tiger Woods has been in a golf funk for the better part of two years, but the 14 time major winner has demonstrated enough of his old form this season for the odds makers to make him the Open Championship favorite. Woods played miserably at the Masters, recording his worst ever finish at Augusta with a five over 293, however, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational on March 25th and he placed second at the Honda Classic on March 4th.

Woods, who is presently third all-time in both PGA Tour (72) and European Tour victories (38), has produced an average finish of 12.6 in five events played (includes the European Tour Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship but doe not factor in his withdraw at the WGC-Cadillac Championships) this season.

Woods, a back-to-back Claret Jug winner in 2005 and 2006, has struggled at the Open Championship in recent years, missing the cut in 2009 before tying for 23rd in 2010. He did not participate in last year’s event due to a knee surgery.

Despite Woods partial turnaround, McIlroy, at 7 to 1 odds, seems like the better betting choice. The Northern Ireland native also turned in a lackluster outing at Augusta over the weekend, tying with Woods, Aaron Baddeley, and Henrik Stenson for 40th, but he has been white hot most of the season ranking first in European Tour earnings and fourth on the PGA Tour moneylist. McIlroy had finished outside the top 10 just one time all season (six events) heading into last weekend’s Masters Tournament.

Other notables on the odds list include Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Darren Clarke, Louis Oosthuizen, and Padraig Harrington. Mickelson, who is seeking his first Claret Jug, is listed at 18 to 1 odds while Clarke, last year’s winner, and Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open champion, are listed are 66 to 1 and 33 to 1 odds, respectively. Harrington, a two time Open winner, and Watson, a five time British Open champion, are presently drawing 33 to 1 and 300 to 1 odds.
