After taking a two-month leave of absence to surgically repair (for the third time) a barking left knee, and skipping The Memorial because his knee wasn’t ready, Tiger Woods took center stage in a place all to familiar to him.

Dressed in his signature Sunday-red-and-black, Tiger went into the Open’s final round with a 1 stroke lead, and holding a streak of 13 consecutive majors won, when leading after three rounds (a 54 hole-lead). This year’s (USGA) U.S. Open was held at beautiful Torrey Pines in La Jolla, right along the San Diego pacific coastline in Southern California. Coming into this weekend’s 2008 U.S. Open, Woods was tied in golf’s all-time list for most wins in a golf course with 6 (Torrey Pines and Firestone).

On Sunday it all came down to the final hole, the par-5 18th. Rocco’s round had concluded, and all he could do was watch as he held on to a slim 1-stroke lead. Off the tee on the 18th, Tiger hooked his tee shot into a fairway bunker. From the bunker, decided to layoff and play for a playoff.

However, his second shot was a disaster, as he hit an iron way right, landing it in the thick rough about 90-100 yards from the green. From there, his chances looked very slim from the thick rough. But he is Tiger Woods, so he hit a good shot landing it on the green, and putting him within striking distance. And then he just did what Tiger does, he delivered yet another incredible ending on the final hole.

In the U.S. Open, there is no sudden death playoff, therefore, these two players will have to play an 18-hole playoff to determine the 2008 U.S. Open winner.

Side note: No one outside the 100th rankings has ever won a U.S. Open, currently Rocco Mediate is ranked 158th in the world.
