Through two rounds of play, Rory McIlroy has owned the 2011 U.S. Open field as well as the expansive course at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The Northern Ireland native currently holds a six stroke lead heading into the final 36 holes. Due to his large advantage, the latest Sports Betting Odds have McIlroy listed as a -400 favorite to win his first major.
Rory McIlroy has been here before, and
not that long ago. The 22 year old phenom played exceptional golf through the first three rounds of The Masters back in April, but an epic Sunday meltdown on the back nine relegated him to a 15th place finish.
Fans of the young Irishman are hopeful that the double bogey he scored on the 18th to close out day two is not a sign of things to come. The miscue marked his first of the entire tournament, a truly remarkable feat considering the difficulty of U.S. Open play.
In fact, McIlroy set a tournament record on Friday, sitting at 13 under par heading into the final hole; no player had ever reached a score that low at a U.S. Open event.
McIlroy, who has birdied 11 of his first 36 holes played at Congressional, is not totally in the clear, though. South Korea's Y.E. Yang, who will tee off with McIlroy at 10:50 PM ET this morning, is within striking distance of the leader.
Yang, who won the 2009 PGA Championship, currently sits at five under par after following up his opening round 68 with a second round score of 69. Yang is presently listed at +800 moneyline odds to overtake McIlroy and win his second major championship.
