2010 British Open: Rory McIlroy vs Lee Westwood Betting Odds: Move over Phil Mickelson, a 21-year-old could possibly be to the one to stir things up for Tiger Woods. Rory McIlroy has been picked as second favorite behind the world No. 1 to win the British Open this week at the Home of Golf. The young Irishman has had the opportunity to play at St. Andrews in the past, and out of all the times he has played, McIlroy has not scored less than a 69.
"I've played well here in the past and if I don't let the occasion get the better of me, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to do so again."
In order to keep his status as a serious contender, the 21-year-old has tried to make it a point not to get too worked up and overwhelm himself with what may come. For instance, McIlroy decided that he would fly home and play a local golf course with his dad instead of playing at the Old Course.
On Tuesday he was also not to be seen. "It's going to be a very special week. I'm just trying to stay as low profile as I can, if that's going to be possible and not to let the occasion get the better of me,” shared McIlroy.
The young Irishman was first really noticed in 2007 at Carnoustie, when as an 18-year-old amateur, he was able to shoot three-under par in the first round. He quickly turned pro and had his first big win in 2009 at the Dubai Desert Classic, shooting into the world top 20.
