Phil Mickelson Among British Open 2008 Betting Favorites: The 137th British Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Course is set to tee off Thursday July 17th 2008 thru Sunday July 20th from Merseyside, England. Among the favorites in this year’s edition of The Open Championship is Phil Mickelson. Odds-makers at SportsBook.com have this year’s 2008 British Open Championship Betting Odds covered. According to betting odds already posted at SportsBook, “Lefty” will be among the favorites to win The Open Championship. Phil Mickelson’s betting odds to win the 2008 British Open are third best (to Garcia and Else) at 16 - 1. Tuesday after playing a practice round, Mickelson addressed the media and answered questions. But what was peculiar about Phil's media session was the way he blatantly avoided mentioning a certain name… a name that begins with the letter “T”. On several occasions, reporters asked Phil questions directly pertaining to the recuperating world’s No. 1 Tiger Woods; and every time Lefty avoided mentioning his name. According to the Associated Press: “So, Lefty, are the majors diminished because a certain No.1 player –and perhaps the greatest to ever swing a golf club– isn’t at the British Open?” Phil’s Response: “I am working hard to get my game ready for this week, and I’ve practiced hard. I’ve developed a good game plan for this event, and I am excited to compete against whoever is on the field.” Phil continued to do the same for the remainder of the interview, refraining from using the T-word. Mickelson, who has yet to come close to winning a major since his monumental meltdown at the 72nd hole of the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot, is riding an 8-major winless streak. During this specific time, Mickelson has also missed the cut in 2 of those major championships.
