2009 British Open Predictions: As the 138th British Open Championship will begin tomorrow, many are wondering what to expect on this fairly new course on Scotland’s Ayrshire Coast as well as who will take home the sought after Claret Jug. Many of the golfers that were not present in the 1994 British Open hosted at Turnberry, have made it a point to get out there and learn the course in and out. What conclusion did they come to?
They could all agree that beyond the smooth fairways, there is a grass so bulky one could have trouble finding a baseball as well as intimidating bunkers, that pose a serious threat to these Turnberry newcomers.
Angel Cabrera [+6500 ML], 2009 Masters champion shared his thoughts on his approach for the upcoming Open. “I think I’m going to be playing short of the bunkers pretty much all week,” Cabrera said. “That will be my strategy.”
Padraid Harrington [+2500 ML], shared his thoughts on the Turnberry bunkers. “My whole links golfing life, I’ve avoided the bunkers at all costs,” he said. “Bunkers are like water hazards on a links course. You’re chipping out. Avoid at all costs.”
Harrington has the hopes of becoming the first player to win three straight British Opens, since Peter Thomson in 1954-1956. “The penalty will be missing the fairways. The guy who drives it well this week has a big advantage, much more this week than on any links golf course I’ve seen in a long time,” shared the defending champ.
All eyes have once again been on Tiger Woods, who is still without a major title since 2004. Even though his way back from knee reconstruction surgery has been tough, Tiger recognizes he is pleased with the work he has done considering the circumstances.

"It's been a tremendous success," he said. "I remember looking at the year and (thinking) hopefully I can play and hopefully I can play at a high level. Granted, I haven't won a major, but I've come close. But to have three wins, realistically, looking at my situation at the beginning of the year, to have three wins, I wouldn't have thought that."
