The 141st edition of the British Open is scheduled to get underway at 1:19am ET on Thursday, July 19th. The third of the season’s four golf majors will be played at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in St. Annes, England. The par 70 course features over 200 bunkers and 7,000 yards of playing distance. The latest Golf Odds have Tiger Woods listed as a +500 moneyline favorite to win his fourth British Open title and 15th major championship. Also among the favorites to win this weekend are Rory McIlroy (+1000), Lee Westwood (+1000), Luke Donald (+1800), and Phil Mickelson (+1500).
Tiger Woods is still searching for the form that garnered him six major championships between 2005 and 2008, but his results this season would indicate he is capable of becoming the world’s No. 1 golfer once again. Woods has five top five finishes, including three wins, in 13 events played, giving him more quality results this year than 2010 and 2011 combined (four top five finishes between the two seasons).
As further proof that Woods is nearing his former status, he currently ranks first on the PGA Tour in FedEX Cup Points (1,952) and overall earnings ($4,220,398). Woods is also first in scoring average on the Tour at 69.08.
This week will mark Woods third Open Championship appearance at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club. He placed 22nd there as a low amateur in 1996 and he finished tied for 25th when the course hosted the event in 2001.
Woods is scheduled to begin play at 4:20am ET tomorrow morning; he is paired with current Race to Dubai leader Justin Rose and Spain’s Sergio Garcia.
Rory McIlory will be seeking his second major and first British Open championship when he tees off tomorrow. McIlroy presently sits second in the Official World Golf Rankings and third in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai standings; however, his recent play has been suspect at best. Since his hot 2012 start, McIlory has four missed cuts and just one top five finish.
Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, who are first and third in the Official World Golf Rankings respectively, are both still chasing their first career major. While Donald is considered the world’s No. 1 golfer, Westwood is viewed by many as having a better opportunity to win this weekend. Westwood has performed better in major championship play over the last few years, recording eight top 10 finishes in 11 tournament appearances, and he has two top three finishes in the last three British Opens.
Phil Mickelson, a four time major winner, has yet to win a Claret Jug, but he did produce his best finish at the British Open last year, placing second with a two under par 278.
