Rory McIlroy Wins 2014 PGA Championship

rory mcilroy 2014 pgaRory McIlroy entered the 2014 PGA Championship as a 5 to 1 golf odds favorite at offshore bookmaker Bovada.lv. He did not disappoint his backers, concluding the season’s final major with a 16 under par 268. The score was good enough for first place and the lion’s share of a $10 million purse. Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson finished second and tied for third, respectively, at 269 and 270.

Rory McIlroy shot his worst round of the 2014 PGA Championship this afternoon, but he still finished the day three under par with a 68. The effort, thanks to the work McIlroy did through the first three rounds of play, proved good enough to hold off Mickelson and Stenson both of which fired a five under 66 today.

McIlroy’s final round got off to a shaky start as he hit bogeys on holes three and six, but he was flawless the rest of the way. The Northern Ireland native started his turnaround with a birdie on the par five seventh and he opened the back nine with an eagle on the 10th. Birdies on the 13th and 17th followed, securing McIlroy his second PGA Championship.

McIlroy’s triumph at Valhalla marked his third consecutive tournament victory as he sandwiched a win at the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational between the Open Championship and this weekend’s event.

Now the owner of four major championships, McIlroy is well on his way to becoming the new face of golf. Tiger Woods, who missed the cut this weekend, is still the PGA’s poster boy, but his health issues coupled with McIlroy’s incredible late season run have put his top dog status in jeopardy.
