Vijay Singh Wins FedEx Cup 2008: The “Big Fijian” Vijay Singh captured the 2008 FedEx Cup this weekend in East Lake, Atlanta, by finishing with an even-par round of 70, and a 9-over 289 total that left him in a tie for 22nd place a field of 30 players. The entire time, all Vijay had to do was not mess it up, and the Cup, as well as a $10 million bonus were his. “I was reminded a thousand times before I started this week:
Make sure you finish 72 holes, sign your card, (have) enough clubs and, gosh, everything else… I’m glad it’s over. I tried to make it very simple on my card today, no mistakes, and make all 18 pars.”
Singh finished 16 strokes behind the winner, Camilo Villegas , who beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Villegas captured his second PGA Tour victory.
After basically securing the FedEx Cup with a five-stroke win at the Deutsche Bank Championship, Singh found it difficult to kick it into cruise control for the remainder of the playoffs.
“You make a bogey, you get congratulated. You make a double, you get congratulated,” Singh said.
“It didn’t really matter what I made. It took away the focus of playing this tournament. I tried really hard. When I left to come here to play, I said, ‘I’m going to keep focus.’ But that’s as far as I got."
