2014 Kentucky Derby Odds

california chromeThe first Saturday in May is drawing ever closer, which means the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby is nearly upon us as well. The field of Derby contenders is still rather large, but a few colts have distinguished themselves. The latest 2014 Kentucky Derby Odds give a pretty good indication of which horses are expected to present well in the upcoming Run for the Roses based upon their Derby Trail performance and pedigree. California Chrome, the top points earner for entry into the Derby field, is a +300 horse racing odds favorite to win this year’s Kentucky Derby. Chrome is followed by the James Jerkens trained Wicked Strong at +600 odds and Kiaran McLaughlin’s Cairo Prince at +1500 odds.

California Chrome (+300): California Chrome, a product of Lucky Pulpit and Love The Chase, was something of a slow starter as it registered a fifth and two sixth place finishes after breaking its maiden in May of last year.  However, it did record a first place finish at the 5 1/2 furlongs Graduation Stakes in the midst of that otherwise lackluster stretch. The colt has been unbeatable of late, though, having won four straight races, including the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby.

Wicked Strong (+600): Wicked Strong needed two attempts to break his maiden and he followed his initial victory with third, ninth, and fourth place results. The product of Hard Spun and Moyne Abbey turned heads with his performance at the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, though. Wicked Strong, which has a wonderful distance pedigree, won the 1 1/8th miles race in a time of 1:49.31. The colt is presently fourth on the Derby qualifying points leaderboard with 102.

Cairo Prince (+1500): The Kiaran McLaughlin trained Cairo Prince has just 24 Derby entry points at this juncture, but it should earn a qualifying spot. Cairo Prince, who was sired by Pioneerof The Nile and out of Holy Bubbette, took second at the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes after breaking his maiden. He followed his solid Remsen showing with a win at the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes; however, the colt finished a disappointing fourth in his last race, the Grade 1 Florida Derby. He entered the notable Derby Trail event as a 6 to 5 favorite.

Other highly regarded potential Derby runners include Constitution, Vicar’s In Trouble, Hoppertunity, and Danza. Constitution, the Todd Pletcher trained Florida Derby winner, is drawing +1600 Derby odds while the other three colts are each getting +1800 odds. Vicar’s In Trouble mostly recently won the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby; Hoppertunity won the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and took second at the Santa Anita Derby; Danza, another Todd Pletcher colt, was the surprise winner of last weekend’s Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.

The 2014 Kentucky Derby is scheduled to get underway at 7:00pm ET on Saturday, May 3rd at the Churchill Downs Race Track in Louisville; the race will be broadcast live on NBC.
