Renowned trainer Bob Baffert already has three Kentucky Derby wins on his resume, but he will have a fourth if the latest 2015 Kentucky Derby Odds are correct. Baffert’s American Pharoah, which is owned by Zayat Stables, is the favorite to win the 141st Run for the Roses at 5 to 2 odds while his stable mate, Dortmund, is drawing 4 to 1 odds as a second Derby pick.
While Dortmund is undefeated in six starts and has four graded stakes wins on his resume, it is American Pharoah, a product of Pioneerof the Nile, that is getting top billing heading into this year’s Derby.
The colt opened its race career with a fifth place finish in an MSW at Del Mar, but it has not tasted defeat since. American Pharoah captured the seven furlongs Del Mar Futurity last September before going on to score easy wins in the FrontRunner Stakes, Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby.
Baffert has not so much overtly leaned toward one colt or the other, but he is pleased to have both of them in his stable.
“The thing is to win it,” Baffert said. “I feel like it’s a strong hand with two really strong horses.”
Baffert is not the only well known trainer with a pair of strong contenders in this year’s field, though. Todd Pletcher, who’s Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby in 2010, will send Carpe Diem and Materiality to the starting gate at Churchill Downs next Saturday.
Both colts are highly regarded with Carpe Diem, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Blue Grass Stakes champion, owning four wins in five starts and Materiality, the Florida Derby winner being unbeaten in three.
