Dortmund has been playing second fiddle to his stable mate American Pharoah for weeks now, but the colt will have his opportunity to steal the spotlight this Saturday. If the latest 2015 Kentucky Derby Odds & Picks hold, Dortmund will go off as a second pick to American Pharoah when the bell rings at Churchill Downs. The chestnut colt is presently drawing a 9 to 2 line while his rival is sitting on a 9 to 4 price as the favorite.
Were it not for American Pharoah, Dortmund, a product of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, would be a clear cut favorite in Saturday’s 141st Run for the Roses.
The colt has six races under its belt and it emerged victorious in all of them, including two Grade I and two Grade II outings. Most recently, Dortmund won the Santa Anita Derby, navigating the 1 1/8-miles race in 1:48.73 to beat a six-horse field that included Derby runner Bolo.
Dortmund also bested fellow Derby runner Firing Line, who is going off at 16 to 1 odds to win Saturday’s race, in both the Los Alamitos Futurity and the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.
That track record, obviously, speaks for itself, but the colt also has the kind of stature that could serve him well in a crowded Derby field.
“He’s just a big, tall horse, and he has speed,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “He’s really, really fast.”
“When he comes out of the stall, he just keeps coming out.”
Of course, size will not determine the Derby champion, but it certainly will not hurt, especially when coupled with speed, when the field breaks from the gate this weekend.
